Backseat Saints

Here's a late breaking addition to our summer reads called Backseat Saints by another favorite bookclub authors, Joshilyn Jackson. If The Girl Who Stopped Swimming is any indicator of what we should expect this time around, then we are in for a serious treat! And here are some reviews worthy of reading:
"For me, the arrival of a Joshilyn Jackson novel feels like the first perfect day in a favorite season and BACKSEAT SAINTS is no exception. It is enthralling, heartbreaking and surprising in equal measure. I am so very glad that I got to know the girl who was born Rose Mae Lolley -- and, better yet, that she got to know herself as well."
– Laura Lippman, NYT bestselling author of Another Thing to Fall and Life Sentences

"Backseat Saints will pull you in and won't let you out until the last page. Raw, tangy and funny, it is an enthralling peek into the secret sorority of mistreated women. Follow the journey of one courageous, witty woman who decides, I'm not going to take this anymore. I love reading about smart, flawed and ultimately wise women, like Rose Mae."
– Kathryn Stockett, NYT Bestselling author of The Help
Get this one. How can you not?

  1. Okay first of all...

    OH MY GOD!!

    FIVE STARS!

First off, this is gripping, from first page to last. But, if you read her last book, "The Girl Who Stopped Swimming", you have some idea of the authors style of writing. It is riveting. It pulls you it, makes you feel like you are watching the events unfolding and find yourself rooting for the heroine of the story, and her dog, too!

Being the victim of domestic violence, it was hard at first to listen to the story, because if you live it, it gets you at a place that you never really want to go back to. But back I went for the sake of the story.

I actually listened to it in the authors voice. What an amazing experience. Hearing her tell the story in the words that she had written in the voice of Rose May just brought this story to life in ways that I could not have gotten on the ereader. Yes, this is the book I have on both.

Her southern drawl, the way she communicates the places, the smells, the physicality of the abuse, and her reactions to it, is something to behold in the telling of the story.

I cannot tell you how it ends because it will spoil it for you.

But I will tell you the dog is fine!

    I loved this book!

I am going to have to go read the rest of her books I have on the ereader!

  8. FIVE BIG HUGE SPARKLY STARS!

Joshilyn Jackson did such a stupendous job at captivating and keeping me guessing right up until the very last sentence. I loved everything about this book and recommend it to anyone looking for a book filled with suspense. The ending came out of nowhere - totally unexpected, but then I really didn't know what to expect the entire way through the book. It was worth every page!

  9. I am so glad that I did not ruin it for you! Loved it, though it was a harder listen for me, past history involved.

  10. You are a saint - I don't know that I could hold back as well as you did, Becca. And yes, it had to be hard... had some flashbacks from childhood myself. If only Saint Cecelia's really existed...? Total God-send to women in similar situations.
