The Light Between Oceans

Fall reading is underway with our next book,  The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman. A brief synopsis describes the book as:
A novel set on a remote Australian island, where a childless couple live quietly running a lighthouse, until a boat carrying a baby washes ashore.

Talk about intriguing.

  5. I finished reading the final chapter this morning and choked back tears... it really put a lump in my throat. Anyone who has ever had children can relate to Lucy's words when she says, "I'd kill for my baby. No question." That feeling pulls at your heart with all of the characters involved in this story, right to the bittersweet end.

While I wanted the book to end on a happy note, the author doesn't really go there but instead makes this story believable with one of the best quotes driving a stake through your heart, "Sometimes life turns out hard, Isabel. Sometimes it just bites right through you. And sometimes, just when you think it's done its worst, it comes back and takes another chunk." And that it did.

  6. I think that the ending, though sad, brought the story full circle. I do wish that there had been some more time fleshed out for Lucy through her teen years and coping with how her life changed, and what happened to Hannah and Gwen. But it definitely tugged at the heart all the way through. I was shocked, though not surprised by how the husband stepped up and took all the blame for what came to pass. Sad story, but very well written. Definitely recommend it.

  7. I agree with your review and would like to have known more about Lucy, Hannah & Gwen's experience through it all. And shocked is the word for how Tom took all of the blame. Thank goodness others were looking out for him and that Isabel came around and had his back. I'm recommending this book - and looking forward to more by this author.
