as the first book in our fall reading lineup. In this novel, Nell Freudenberger writes about a Bangladeshi woman who meets an American suitor via online dating. After the two are married and living in the United States, many culture-related issues come into play. And if that isn't enough to interest you in reading the book, a Huffington Post interview with the author reveals that the "story was inspired by a woman you (Freudenberger) met on a plane." I think that she is really brave to do what she did in marrying someone she really did not know at all. I think that the culture shock she is beginning to experience are going to be quite the ride. I really do like Kim. I think in some aspects she is going to be the unvarnished honest view of life that she needs. I am thinking that both Nassir and George have their own intentions about Amina, but are they the right intentions? :-)

ReplyDeleteI finished this book today and really liked it. In fact, I can especially relate to another reader's review on Shelfari in saying that the story just kind of found a way into my heart. If only Freudenberger would continue the tale in a sequel, fleshing out the characters more - I would buy it.

I really liked the book. I do wish that we would know what Amina's father really did that got the acid thrown on him. What their lives were like in America. If they were able to adjust to the way we live here. If he continued his money making schemes here. So much more that can be fleshed out.
