So what exactly are other readers saying about Harkness' novel? Check out these review snippets:
“Not merely a fanciful supernatural romance; A Discovery of Witches intellectualises their existence, theorising on the role of genetics, DNA, evolution and extinction; as well as contemplating the pervasiveness of racial prejudices and segregation. … Blending fact and fiction, history and present, delicate courtship and tempestuous tantrums, understanding your identity and losing yourself: it is a beautiful work of fiction that fastens onto your heart and feeds your mind. In other words: probably perfection.”
–The Truth About Books, December 2010
February 2011 Indie Next List — “I lost a good deal of sleep turning the pages of this tale of adventure, suspense, and romance. . . . The author did her homework and the history rings as true as the passion. I can’t wait for the sequel!” Annie Leonard, The Next Chapter, Knoxville, TN... perfection and lost sleep? We MUST read this one.

Ready to discuss this book?
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm ready to discuss this book. My first thought after finishing was "Oh boy... that was really good. My only complaint was that it seemed slow-paced at times making my eyelids heavy. Book 2 will be here tomorrow, but I think a small break is needed."
ReplyDeleteToward the end of the book (spoiler alert!), parts of the time travel segments confused me. I wasn't sure if it my heavy eyelids were to blame or if Harkness was jumping around with little explanation. But despite all of that the forbidden love story won my heart over repeatedly.
... watch out "Twilight" fans, a new vampire movie is sure to be in town soon!
Exactly..when that vampire attacked, it seemed like the whole story was missing. And how Diana got her powers enough and quickly enough to do what she did. It was definitely an odd read, but so good, all the same.
ReplyDeleteWishing the book would've been @100 pages shorter and more to the point toward the end, but the author changed pace almost with the trilogy idea in mind. I do love trilogies and will continue on with the next 2 books, but I do hope the pace is quicker. My eyelids just can't handle another one like this!
