Ok so without further ado, check out what readers are saying about our favorite author's newest novel:
“It's THE BEST OF SARAH! I've been a fan of Sarah Pekkanen since her first book and always look forward to her novels. When I first cracked open The Best of Us, I was a bit intimidated knowing there were so many main characters but Sarah writes in a way that I could easily follow along and each character is easy to get to know. While they are all different and have their own problems and personalities, I found that I sympathized with their struggles, from stressed-out mother of four Tina, to seemingly put-together Allie, insecure Pauline and flirty Savannah. During an all-inclusive dream vacation to Jamaica, the four couples will struggle with internal and external forces of nature from a hurricane to infidelity, jealousy, grief, infertility, medical scares and more. This is one not to miss and like all the rest of Sarah's novels, it is one satifying read that leaves you desperate for the next Pekkanen novel!"

“A Great Tropical Escape with Realistic Characters - Rarely am I able to finish a book in one sitting. Not since I had kids anyway. Over the weekend, I found myself in bed by 10PM which is incredibly early for. However, my brain wouldn't turn off so I picked up The Best of Us by the newest book by Sarah Pekkanen. I've read some of her previous books and knew I would enjoy her newest. I read the entire novel in a few hours. I couldn't put it down until I knew how it ended... I was in a major reading rut recently, and The Best of Us got me out of my rut. "This is exciting stuff, readers. Off to read!

Just finished this book.
ReplyDeleteI liked the inner dynamics of each relationship.
Gio and Tina, the couple who are working hard to make ends meet.
Allie and Ryan. Will Allie's secrets come to life? The ALS story line to me, wrapped up way too simplistically. And her interlude with Dwight. Way too easily dismissed. To me, the real life ramifications are more than a guilt you live with.
Savannah and Gary? It takes two to make or break a marriage. Yes, Gary cheated. But Savannah's reactions and counter reactions are those you would expect from a much younger person. And the random sex after the encounter with the guy at the bar? I would think she would have been more careful. And to tell Gary to come to Jamaica that day, what a test. Then treat him like gum under her shoe. She seems someone far more insecure than her personality lets on. Unclear where that is headed.
Dwight and Pauline. Clearly Dwight is a very laid back guy. Money smart, heart needy? Pauline clearly said she married him first for the money. Wonder if she was someone whom he felt needed taking care of. Did he love her then, or now, really. Did Pauline think that someone as smart as Dwight would not check her out as well as her family? Secrets always have a way of coming out. Will they reconcile? Open ended.
My bigger question, s why did Pauline really throw the weeklong party? What was her motive, was it simply to give Dwight a great birthday, or did she have ulterior motives to check out those people from his past? Her anger t Allie, though I understand it, seems much more deep seated in her own personal shortcomings.
Will we get more of this story? So open ended.
I give this book a solid 4 stars.
I, too, liked how the relationship dynamics of tied into the story and found your review to be RIGHT ON with what I was thinking while reading.
DeleteAllie & Ryan: The ALS simplicity and Allie's keeping of so many secrets from Ryan really threw me. I wanted Allie to just come out with it and stop playing her husband for a fool. I was bothered by that whole situation.
Savannah & Gary: Neither character was particularly likeable but did offer some comic relief, in some sense.
Dwight & Pauline: Secrets upon secrets! How did they ever survive long enough to make it to Dwight's birthday celebration to begin with? I did cheer them on as they turned the corner at the end, but getting past the all of the secrets was quite a struggle for me.
Yes, lots of open-endedness here, so much that I need a sequel just to see how the relationships turn out.
3.5 out of 5 stars - While I always enjoy Pekkanen's writing style, this book was not one of my favorites.
