Fangirl
And now our curiosity has meandered over to an author who is new to the Chicken Lit Bookclub, Rainbow Rowell. The name of the book we have chosen (yes, she has a few publications out there) is called Fangirl
and is described as "a coming-of-age tale of fanfiction, family and first love."

Mixed feelings about Fangirl - definitely not Rowell's best work. Took me longer to read this book compared to most because nothing in the storyline compelled me to continue reading. No plot/action whatsoever? Well, the incident with Wren might count for "action" but I just took it as Commonly Stupid Freshman Behavior. (And that's pretty standard for UNL, a well-known party campus.) Anyway, I like Rowell's writing voice but I'm not a fan of "fan fiction", so that might have been to blame, as well. Overall though, I gave Fangirl 3 stars due to the local references that I recognized. Oh, and having a signed copy purchased from the Omaha Bookworm helped the rating, too.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the only real action was when Wren almost drank herself to death. Now, on the other hand if the characters had been more fleshed out, like the relationship, or lack there of, between mother and daughters, mother and father and why she chose to leave on September 11th, this book would have had a better flow and been far more interesting. Sad to slog through all the pages, and really did nothing to advance or wrap up the story. No, not sure if I would read a follow up to this book, unless it was mesmerizing from the onset. 2 stars. That, unfortunately for me, is generous.
ReplyDeleteNice review & generous rating. Also, if anything, it's been fun having my daughter reading along with us. Her review might be a little more on the positive side than ours!
