this one is MINE

Being all curious about MORE Maria Semple books, we are now reading this one is MINE.

That's just what we do here.

  1. Okay, here we go..

Let's start with the characters and a one word description of each..

    David...anal
    violet..flighty
    Sally...manipulative
    Teddy...predator
    Kurt....opportunist
    Jeremy..detached
    Dot.....adorable
    Kara....flighty

This story took a few twists and turns.

In what universe would you expect the richest of the rich, to have an affair with a Hep C patient who would not use condoms? Talk about the height or risk. But they fed off of each others need to think that they were in control of some aspect of their lives.

And the switch of how David went to the yoga getaway with the intent that he was going to divorce her and make her life miserable, and then comes home and treats her like he was unaware of her transgressions. His complete attitude change was quite odd.

And Sally. Oh my where do I start with her. She is everything that is judgmental in a person. From her snarky commentary about peoples weight, their children, her best supposed girlfriend. Seems like she thought she was so much more elevated than everyone else. Then to learn she filed bankruptcy, and had three abortions. So she is not little miss perfect. And then to learn that she has Hep C. But never gave thought to the fact that she used a needle found behind a toilet to give her injection.

I liked the book, but it showed the potential worst sides of people. I am sure that some of it is true human nature, but kind of made me sad, that the people who had the most in life, either took it for granted, or acted out in spite of it.

It was a really good book, shocked me at times, but I will give it 3.5 stars.

  2. After reading "Where'd You Go, Bernadette" and liking it enough to call it a new favorite book, I just had to read more writing by Maria Semple. While it ended with a satisfying conclusion and kept my interest throughout, the book started on an unexpected raunchy note. But if you can get past that element, everything else ties together well and is worth the read.

  3. Exactly..glad you understood where I was coming from. Not a prude by a long shot, but that was something else, even for me.

  4. Yeah, I was glad you gave me some warning - kind of a shock if you're not expecting it!
