The First Phone Call from Heaven

Our next book club pick is called The First Phone Call from Heaven by Mitch Albom, an author already familiar to our readers.  Will this book be about the greatest miracle ever?  Or will we find out that it is just about a massive hoax?  Here's what Mitch Albom has to say about his novel:

  1. I really enjoyed this story, especially with twisty turns at the end that I never saw coming. This is a book that truly touched my heart and has left me feeling hopeful for mankind, which isn't an easy thing to do with the way the world functions. But it did, and I'm left with an experience that will stay with me for a very long time.

4 out of 5 stars - mostly because I had some technological "what if's" along the way, making me question the plausibility of events. (That comes from an IT Geek reader such as myself!) Otherwise, I tried to ignore my second guesses and enjoyed the ride, a very good one at that.

Then again, I enjoy all Mitch Albom books.

I was both happy and sad when it was discovered that the voices were not really from Heaven. I think that God would be so much more technologically advanced than to use a lowly telephone to reach the masses.

But that does not explain what happened to Sully and Giselle. It was after the old man died in his house. So maybe could have, would have.

I guess that you really do have to want to believe in miracles and the goodness of others. I was bothered by how quickly the first person, at least in her own perspective, became so influential and possessive. But then again it is human nature to keep something that good only to ones self. Also the bad in the people who push and shove and scream above all others to drown out opposing viewpoints. Not a whole lot different from what we have seen in these times that we live in.

I did like how it went in weeks, so that you could see how the emotion, derision, audience, became so involved, even if just on the periphery of the story. I kind of felt like I was being pulled a long for the ride.

I really did not know how this story was going to end, or the twists that took you there. I am married to a network security guy and should have seen it coming, but was surprised at how it ended.

I do wish that he had gotten the reaction of the people who thought that they heard from Heaven. Did they still believe after it was debunked in the press. That would have been quite interesting.

    Agreed, 4 of 5 stars!
