Last but not least for our summer reading pleasure is a
Jennifer Weiner novel called

As with all of her books that we've read previously, Weiner's novel likely should be another page-turner:

ReplyDeleteI am in chapter 7..this is a complicated book, but I think going to be a great read.
Starting ch 6 here ("Lizzie") - lots of background information. I keep waiting for the action to begin!

From my point of view at 1/3 of the way through the book, it leaves a lot to be desired. Disappointing, yes.

ReplyDeleteI think it's mostly because of Jennifer Weiner's reputation, because you and I both can't be so blind - can we? We're not missing anything IMHO. Where are you now? LMK if you decide to bail- I might follow suit.

ReplyDeleteIt takes the end of part two and the beginning of part 3 for it all to start coming together. But Brenda there is a reason why Lizzie became an addict. Yikes.

ReplyDeleteFinished reading the book this morning and have to say I'm just plain disappointed. Yes, there were a couple of interesting moments but that wasn't enough to make up for the slow moving storyline. I'm giving it 3 out of 5 stars. (Sorry Jennifer Weiner!)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I hate that it took so far into the book for the story to pick up. I have no idea why I stuck with it, but I did. I don't think that any of the characters were fleshed out well, and all the gray and glum was wearing. And how did it end between Diana and Gary, and did it work out between Lizzie and Jeff? And why oh why would Sylvie go back to that man after what he did, I will not understand that, and there were not any really explanations to the story, it seemed really, what is the word that I am looking for, disjointed? Scattered? There wasn't a chance given to the man from the grocer or the impact on the son when mom left dad.

Did you read the 'Acknowledgements' at the end by Jennifer Weiner? The book actually got its start 10 years ago when she was a "lowly newspaper reporter with a manuscript and a dream" which might explain why this book isn't the usual Jennifer Weiner-style.
ReplyDeleteBut yes, I too loved Grandma. She reminded me of my own Mother. Not afraid to speak her mind, that's for sure.
I'm hopeful that our next book is nothing like this one!
